Matariki is the name of the month signifying the lunar new year for Maori in New Zealand. It reminds us it is time to prepare for the coming new season, the changes of weather on the oceans and to be thankful of the awareness of these blessings, as our ancestors intended us to use this knowledge. The Voyage depicts the epic voyage of Kupe to Aotearoa, now named New Zealand. His mastery of navigation meant he made the journey multiple times, taking with him family each time, crop seeds and animals to settle the rich, fresh new land.
This piece was part of The Lake House Art Centre Matariki Exhibition in 2019.
