This figure from the silver screen is controversial to this day. Charlie Chaplin had a career that spanned 75 years, including the founding of United Artists, 100+ productions, pioneered directing and acting simultaneously and brought laughter to millions worldwide, and has a legacy of influence for generations of performers since. He was vocally against the various dictatorships in Europe, but his socialist leanings won him few allies in the US.
Imagine the young Englishman, of humble working-class origins, a performer with dreams, aspirations, and ambition, and new to the US.
